Global Illumination calculation may be split  into near-effects (using e.g. SSAO+transfer,…), mid-range-effects (using e.g.  instant radiosity with range-clamping, lightfields, localized lightingboxes, …) and far-range-effects (using e.g. global lightingboxes).
